Sofia, Kazanlak, Veliko Tarnovo, Varna, Plovdiv


This is a classic tour of Bulgaria that goes through the oldest cultural and historical centers of the country. It's for those who haven't been to Bulgaria yet and wish to make the most of it within a week or so. We'll explore Sofia, drive up to the Rila Monastery, visit the old town of Plovdiv, as well as spend a night in the old capital of Veliko Tarnovo. The last two days we will be by the Black Sea to see the old Nessebar and get some sunshine. To save your time SITA will book your flight ticket in advance to make your journey back to Sofia last only 40 minutes.

Day 1

Morning city tour of Sofia - Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the 4-th century St. George Rotonda, the Mosque, the Synagogue, the Old quarter, etc. After lunch we drive to the foot of Vitosha Mountain to visit the amazing frescos of the UNESCO listed Boyana church.

Day 2

Morning departure to Rila Monastery - the biggest in Bulgaria and one of Europe's oldest, UNESCO Site. We visit the monastery  museum, spend some among nature and after lunch drive back to Sofia. 

Day 3

Morning departure to Koprivshtitsa – a museum town with fine National Revival architecture. After lunch proceed to Kazanlak, located in the famous Valley of Roses. Visit UNESCO's Thracian tomb of Kazanlak and the Rose museum. Overnight in Kazanlak.

Day 4
Veliko Tarnovo

After breakfast we drive to the Medieval Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo via Etara open-air ethnographic museum. We pass the Balkan Mountains Range at 1150 m. through the spectacular Shipka pass. In Veliko Tarnovo visit Tsarevets Fortress.

Day 5

After breakfast we drive to the traditional village of Arbanasi. Here we make a short stop and enter the Church of Nativity of Christ. In the afternnoon we take a break in Shumen and visit the UNESCO listed Madara Rider. Late arrival in Varna for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6

City tour of Varna -  visit the Cathedral of Assumption and Archaeological museum. Afternoon visit to Balchik - a scenic historical town some 45 km away from Varna. Visit the Bothanical Garden and the Palace of Queen Marie of Romania.

Day 7

Morning departure to the more than 3,000-year-old town of Nessebar (UNESCO Site). We have lunch by the sea and taste some local seafood delicacies. In the afternoon we drive to Plovdiv for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8

Morning sightseeing tour of Plovdiv – the second biggest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest in Europe. We see the Old Town, the Ancient Theatre, Ethnographic museum, St. Constantine and Helena church. After lunch we drive back to Sofia. Afternoon at leisure, dinner and overnight.

Day 9

Free morning. Depart hotel for Sofia Airport (time to be advised).
